To serve others has been embedded in me at a young age. Family was important to my mother and being there for her family and as well as others was just as equally important. To her family was not only those individuals that had a blood relation. It was also those individuals she would encounter that needed some assistance along their way, in their own life's journey. She was always willing to serve and assist them however she could. She did it with gladness of heart and a smile on her face. Serving others truly made her joyous inside. Therefore, she was always assisting her family and her extended family. I can recall a few things she would do pretty consistently; she cleaned the church, once she had an entire family living in our living room, she would prepare food for different individuals, she would go visit a few elderly people and sit and talk for hours, she would go help clean someone's house, and she was always willing to allow my brother's friends to stay extended stays with us sometimes turning into living with us for a few years. She was always open to assisting others and my sister and I were right there with her working in all that she would find her hands to do. She had seven children and yet she was willing to take on more responsibilities in helping others. “Serving is an honor, so do it with gladness of heart no matter what you were tasked to do,” is what she would say to us all. She led by example and showed us how to serve in the manner that she expected us to do so. It was a thought that I had, to do more in the community where I was raised, in Knoxville, TN, and I needed support to make it happen. So, I began to tell my family and friends what I desired, and they quickly agreed to assist. I experience that joyous feeling in 2019 that my mother so spoke about as she served when I was a kid, but I felt like it was more like a chore back then. On that day, when my thought became a reality with the assistants of others, my heart was full, and each year after. I was truly joyously happy that we came together to serve someone else. Community of Givers was created in a moment of realization with the first giveaway that it took everyone working together to make it happen for someone else. I understand that we are nothing without those who are willing to help someone else without judgment or looking down on their situation or circumstances. I also recognize, "We Work Better Together," and therefore Community of Givers are you, me, we, them, all of us working together to make things happen for someone else with a smile on our face no matter their circumstance.
I know,
"We Work Better Together"
